Iranian nuclear scientists' murder suspects arrested
TEHRAN - Iran has claimed that it has detained two suspects with Israeli ties allegedly linked to the assassinations of its nuclear scientists, but there were no details about their identities.
"The main elements behind the killings (of two nuclear scientists) were arrested and moved to detention following an investigation of at least 18 months involving surveillance in Iran and abroad," a statement from the intelligence ministry said
The statement published by the state media said it had identified a number of agents affiliated with the "Zionist regime" involved in assassination of two keys scientists -- Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, killed in January this year, and Majid Shariari, murdered in 2010.
Shariari was a senior nuclear scientist and Roshan was a key figure at one of Iran's main uranium-enrichment facilities Natanz.
Shahriari was killed and another nuclear scientist Abbasi was seriously wounded in Tehran November 29, 2010, when motorcycle riders stuck magnetic bombs to the windows of their cars in different parts of the city.
Roshan and his bodyguard were killed in a car bomb explosion in Tehran January 11, 2012.
At least four scientists associated with Iran's nuclear program have been killed since 2010 and a fifth - Fereydoun Abbasi Davani, now head of the AEOI - wounded.
"A series of heavy and thorough intelligence operations which begun after the assassination of our first nuclear scientists led to the identification of a number of agents [gathering information] for the fake regime that rules over the occupied territories," the statement said.
Iran and the Western powers led by the US are in the middle of a row over Tehran's controversial nuclear programme.
Iran denies Western accusations that it is developing a nuclear weapons capability, saying it wants to generate electricity and radio isotopes for medical treatment.
