The iPad and iPhone maker Apple has surpassed Exxon Mobil as the most valuable firm in the US in terms of market capitalisation.

The technology firm, which also produces computers and other products, also recently overtook technology Goliath Microsoft as the leader of the technology industry.

Apple’s stock performance saw the company become the most valuable in the US briefly on Tuesday, before falling back against Exxon Mobil at the close of trade, but by the end of the day Wednesday, Apple had closed as the leader in the US for the first time.

Apple is now worth US $337 billion, while Exxon Mobil closed with a market value of US $331 billion after its shares fell 4.4%, impacted by falling oil prices.
