SAN JOSE -- Tropical storm Amanda caused significant destruction in El Salvador, killing 11 people before it weakened into a tropical depression, the government said on Sunday.

Mudslides, floods and bursting rivers led to the fatalities, the civil protection agency said.

Three of the deaths occurred in Granadillas, a district in the town of San Juan Opico, where a family was swept away by raging flood waters. (El Salvador-Storm)

TOKYO -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on Monday struck Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The temblor occurred at 6:02 a.m. local time, with its epicenter at 36.2 degrees north latitude and 140.4 degrees east longitude, and at a depth of 100 km. (Japan-Earthquake)

TRIPOLI -- At least five people were killed and three others wounded by indiscriminate shelling that hit the Libyan capital Tripoli on Sunday, according to a local official.

The deadly shelling took place as the fighting between the UN-backed government's forces and the eastern-based army intensified in southern Tripoli, said Amin Hashemi, information advisor of the Ministry of Health.

ANKARA -- Three members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were killed in eastern Bitlis province of Turkey, the Turkish interior ministry said on Sunday.

Turkish security forces conducted an air-backed operation in the region, the ministry said in a written statement noting that the operations are underway in the region. (Turkey-PKK)
