Turkish police arrest IS suspect planning "terror" attacks: media

ISTANBUL, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police arrested a suspected Islamic State (IS) member in Istanbul on Thursday, who was "planning" to carry out "terror" attacks, the state-run TRT broadcaster reported.

The operation followed intelligence suggesting the suspect was "planning" to participate in attacks on Jewish schools and synagogues in Trkiye, said the report.

Further investigation indicated that the suspect was in contact with another person seeking to carry out similar attacks in Trkiye and beyond, it added.

The suspect was apprehended in a raid in the Fatih district on the city's European side. Following procedures at the police station, he was subsequently arrested by judicial authorities, according to the report.

Trkiye designated the IS as a terrorist organization in 2013, blaming it for a spate of deadly attacks in the country. Ankara has conducted counter-terrorism operations domestically and abroad to crack down on its members and activities.
