PanARMENIAN.Net - A criminal case has been launched against Tugce Yilmaz, editor at the Turkish news platform Bianet, under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, which criminalizes "insulting the Turkish nation and state." The charge stems from a piece related to the Armenian Genocide, Factor.am reports.
The indictment is based on Yilmaz's interview titled "Armenian Youth Speak: 109 Years of Mourning," where Armenian youth discussed their connection to the Armenian language and culture, and reflected on April 24, 1915, and life in Istanbul.
The trial began at Istanbul's Second Criminal Court. Yilmaz is represented by lawyer Deniz Yazgan, Batikan Erkoc from the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), and Elif Ergin from the Turkish Journalists' Union (TGS).
"I'm here today because, as a journalist, I exercised freedom of expression, which is protected by law. Yet I was reported to CMER [Presidential Communication Center]," said Yilmaz.
She referenced recent diplomatic efforts between Turkey and Armenia, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's visit to Turkey and ongoing talks on opening borders and restoring trade ties.
"I want to stress that this case targets my profession, which I've practiced with enthusiasm and curiosity since 2015. I haven't insulted anyone. On the contrary, I've given a voice to those who feel marginalized," she said.
Yilmaz concluded her statement by invoking the memory of journalist Hrant Dink, who was also prosecuted under Article 301 and later assassinated. She called on the court to acquit her.
The next hearing is scheduled for April 21.
