ANKARA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Turkish security forces detained 47 suspects in a nationwide crackdown on illegal online gambling, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.
The crackdown spanned 23 provinces, centered in the southern province of Adana, and involved a detected financial volume of 5 billion Turkish lira (about 108 million U.S. dollars), the ministry said on social media platform X, without specifying the timeframe of the crackdown.
The detained included those who managed the control panels of illegal gambling websites via information systems and acted as intermediaries in money transfers from criminal proceeds, it said.
Authorities imposed precautionary measures against one shell company, 23 residences, 29 vehicles, 13 land plots, 4,742 bank accounts, and six cryptocurrency accounts linked to the suspects, it added.
Gambling is highly restricted in Trkiye. Casinos were banned in 1998, and all non-state online gambling has been illegal since 2006. Only state-run betting, such as the Iddaa sports platform and Milli Piyango, remains legal.
A national survey conducted in 2025 by Turkish authorities showed that gambling remains widespread in the country, with 10.1 percent of adults reporting participation at least once in their lifetime. The survey also noted a rapid increase in illegal online betting, particularly among those aged 15-24.
Separately, the Trade Ministry said Tuesday that Turkish customs seized around 381,750 euros (about 441,561 dollars) in cash hidden inside at least six baby diapers in a carry-on suitcase from a passenger who arrived in southern Trkiye's tourist city of Antalya from Paris.
Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the case. While there is no legal cash import limit in Trkiye, any amount over 10,000 euros must be declared upon arrival.
