Trkiye detains 17 suspects for financing IS activities

ISTANBUL, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police on Tuesday detained 17 suspects in a nationwide operation targeting the financial networks of the Islamic State (IS) militant group, local authorities said.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said the investigation identified 42 suspects involved in transferring a total of 80 million Turkish liras (about 1.9 million U.S. dollars) to fund IS activities. Among them, 22 are currently abroad, and arrest warrants have been issued for their capture.

The coordinated operation, conducted across six provinces with Istanbul as the central hub, led to the detention of 17 suspects, while efforts continue to locate and apprehend the remaining fugitives.

Trkiye designated IS as a terrorist organization in 2013 and has since suffered multiple attacks carried out by the group. In response, Turkish security forces have intensified counterterrorism operations both domestically and abroad to dismantle IS networks and prevent future threats.
