Turkish defense firms sign 6.5-bln-USD contracts to bolster air defense system

ANKARA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Turkish defense companies have signed contracts worth 6.5 billion U.S. dollars to strengthen the country's integrated air defense system known as "Steel Dome," the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) said Wednesday.

In a statement, SSB President Haluk Gorgun said the contracts cover both existing and advanced versions of air defense and offensive systems produced by Roketsan and Aselsan, Ankara-based Turkish weapons manufacturers and defense contractors.

Gorgun said Trkiye has the capability to produce all components of layered air defense systems domestically, adding that the country is now among the world's top exporters in the defense industry.

SSB is an institution established by the Turkish government to manage the defense industry and the supply of military technology.

The Steel Dome is described as an "integrated architecture" in which air defense systems operating at different altitudes function together under a unified structure.

The system, which combines tracking components such as precision sensors and radars with artificial intelligence and machine learning, provides real-time and high-accuracy analysis of airspace.
