PanARMENIAN.Net - If a peace agreement and long-term settlement are achieved between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the border between Turkey and Armenia will open, said Shamil Ayrim, head of the Turkey-Azerbaijan interparliamentary friendship group.
He made the statement during a joint meeting of working groups from the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, held at the Milli Majlis, APA reports.
Ayrim emphasized "the importance of deepening cooperation among Turkic states in education, energy, security, and culture." According to him, cooperation between the parliaments of Turkey and Azerbaijan "is of strategic importance both regionally and within the Turkic world."
He noted that amid tensions between Iran and the U.S., coordinated actions by Azerbaijan and Turkey play an important role in ensuring regional stability.
According to Ayrim, tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue have further increased this strategic importance, and joint cooperation is necessary to ensure lasting peace in the region.
He also highlighted "the support shown by the presidents of Azerbaijan and Turkey," stressing the role of interparliamentary friendship structures in "strengthening cooperation and advancing joint activity within the Turkic world."
Yerevan and Ankara issued a statement in December 2021 expressing readiness to take steps toward normalizing relations. In 2022, representatives of the two countries agreed in Vienna to open the border to third-country nationals and to launch direct cargo flights, though these agreements have not yet been implemented in practice.
In September 2025, Serdar Kilic visited Armenia. Armenia's Foreign Ministry said the sides discussed steps to implement the agreements reached on July 1, 2022, and agreed to accelerate the process.
