Armenia, Trkiye sign deal to restore ancient Silk Road bridge

YEREVAN, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Armenia and Trkiye signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly restore the historic Ani Bridge, a landmark of the Silk Road on their shared border, during the eighth European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Armenpress reported on Monday.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the deal on X following what he described as a "productive exchange" with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, welcoming the signing of the agreement on the bridge's restoration.

Yilmaz said the two sides discussed bilateral relations and cooperation in transport, customs, energy and digital sectors. He added that the MoU reflects progress in normalization efforts and is expected to contribute to peace and security in the South Caucasus.

In a separate post on X, Yilmaz said Trkiye will continue to promote regional dialogue, economic cooperation and people-to-people contacts, and thanked Pashinyan for his hospitality.
