Heavy rainfall drives Trkiye's hydropower output to record high in April

ISTANBUL, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Rising reservoir levels from heavy spring rainfall pushed Trkiye's hydropower generation to an all-time monthly record of 11.66 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in April, the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry said Monday.

During the month, hydroelectric plants supplied 41.4 percent of the country's electricity output, according to data released by the ministry.

It also showed that national hydropower generation rose to 34.7 billion kWh during the January-April period, the highest level recorded for the first four months of a year.

According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service, precipitation averaged 86.5 millimeters in April, up 50 percent over the 1991-2020 average and 19 percent higher compared to April of last year.

In recent weeks, heavy rainfall has led to rising reservoir levels across Trkiye, with several dams reaching full capacity, prompting controlled spillway releases as a precaution against flooding.
