Erdogan pledges mediation efforts to defuse tensions between Iran, U.S.

ISTANBUL/TEHRAN, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Trkiye is prepared to play a facilitating role between Iran and the United States to help ease regional tensions.

Erdogan made the remarks during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to a statement from Trkiye's Directorate of Communications.

The two leaders discussed the escalating military tensions in the region and the importance of dialogue and cooperation in maintaining stability, the statement said.

Erdogan reiterated Trkiye's readiness to act as a bridge between Tehran and Washington, emphasizing the country's commitment to constructive diplomacy.

According to a statement on the website of the Iranian president's office, the Iranian president highlighted Iran's principled policy of pursuing dignity-based diplomacy within the international law framework, stressing that the country's approach was based on dialogue, mutual respect and win-win logic as well as the rejection of using threats and force.

Pezeshkian added the initiation of effective diplomatic and dialogue-based processes was in need of an atmosphere of mutual trusts, noting that the prerequisites for the success of any diplomatic initiative were the involved parties' efforts to prove their goodwill and the cessation of warmongering and threatening movements in the region.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that a "massive armada," headed by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, is heading toward Iran, and warned that "time is running out" for Tehran to make a deal with the United States.
