ANKARA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Trkiye's monthly inflation accelerated in January, while annual inflation remained above 30 percent, according to official data released on Tuesday.

Figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) showed that consumer prices rose by 4.84 percent on a monthly basis in January, broadly in line with expectations and faster than the previous month.

On an annual basis, inflation eased slightly to 30.65 percent in January, down from 30.89 percent recorded in December.

Data showed that prices continued to increase across the three main expenditure groups. On a yearly basis, food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 31.69 percent, transportation increased by 29.39 percent, and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels climbed by 45.36 percent.

Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said on social media platform X that January's inflation was mainly driven by a sharp rise in food prices due to adverse weather conditions, along with seasonal factors.

Despite the monthly acceleration, he noted that the decline in annual services inflation has continued uninterrupted for 21 months, while core goods inflation maintained a moderate trend at 17.4 percent.

Trkiye has been grappling with high inflation in recent years, which has weighed on household purchasing power and business costs.
